Cesme is a beautiful resort and port town, with stunning isolated beaches, natural springs, unspoiled bays, historical remnants, and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It is situated on the peninsula of the same name on the west coast of Turkey and it reaches out into the sea where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean sea. It is situated on the sloping land at the head of a sea inlet, and is surrounded by citrus and olive groves and abandoned terraces of earlier agriculture.
Cesme means “fountain” or “spring”, and it is indeed a place of refreshment, making it perfect for a relaxing holiday.
A Little Bit of History
This port city was the port of Ancient City of Erythrai and was called Cyssus in ancient times. It passed between the hands of various rulers like the Ionians, Lydians, Romans, Byzantines and the Turks.
A Beach in Cesme
The town experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages, when export and import between Europe and Asia were carried through Cesme.
It developed its trade by establishing relations with Egypt, Cyprus and Western Countries. The Ottomans captured the town in 1566 and later on the trade hub gradually shifted to Izmir.
This city became the location of naval Battle of Chesma during Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774).
Cesme Sea and Music Festival is held every year at the castle. It is a celebration of Turkish culture and world music.
The event includes swimming races, fashion shows, international song contest, music concerts, cocktail parties, and classic Turkish cuisine.
The town has a collection of souvenir, leather, carpet, clothing, footwear and jewelry stores.
