It is believed that Roses is more than 3 millennia old and that it was founded by Greek settlers in eighth century BC. Some claim that the town was founded in the fifth century BC by the Greeks who came from Massalia (Marseilles).

However, an ancient document found in this area dating back to 944 AD mentions the existence of the Santa Maria de Roses monastery, and archaeologists believe that the ancient settlement developed around it.

Later, the Romans settled here, and the Moors followed. The town gained much in the way of Moorish culture and heritage, but their reign was brought to an end with the reunification of this port town with Spain.

For a brief period in the 1600s it was under French occupation. Charles V built a citadel in the sixteenth century whose walled ruins still remain in good shape today.

Although the city suffered from French invasions, a nineteenth century plague and the Spanish Civil War, it thrived and the population grew as it became a popular tourist destination.
